Interview with VIOFLESH by Diego Centurión.

In recent years, the resurgence of post-punk and darkwave has gained strength both in South America and in various corners of the world, consolidating a dark, diverse, and increasingly vibrant scene.

Among these voices stands out Vioflesh, a Chilean duo formed by Vio (lead vocals and lyrics) and Flesh (instruments and production). Since their beginnings, they have projected their vision into soundscapes charged with melancholy, energy, and shadowy dance. With an identity that blends the ethereal and the visceral, the band has established itself as one of the most compelling voices in the region.

In 2025, they return with their new work, Nostalgia, released under the German label darkTunes Music Group. The album confirms their artistic maturity and opens new pathways in their musical journey. With this new chapter underway, we spoke with the band to learn more about their current creative state, their vision, and what it means to keep betting on dark sounds from Chile to the world.

Hello, thank you for accepting this interview. To begin, I’d like you to introduce yourselves as a band and situate us sonically within the intentions of the project.
Hello! We are Vioflesh—Vio and Flesh here. Thank you very much for the interview! Sonically, we aim to reflect our deepest sensitivities and emotions, channeling them through music, both musically and lyrically.

If the player you use to listen to music only had room for five of your songs, which ones would you choose?
"Midnight", "Always", "If I Could", "My way", "Within the veil". Many others had to be left out! 

"Vioflesh - Midnight"

Many readers may not know your story. Tell us, how and when was the band born?
Well, we are from Santiago, Chile. The band started in mid-2017. It began as playful experimentation with a couple of keyboards, which led to our first melodies and demo songs, and eventually the band’s formation. At the end of 2017, we released our first album of eight songs, titled Cromático—and that’s where it all began!

Often, when forming a band, the goal is to find a guiding sound, a recognizable mark that shapes the first steps. What was your guiding point in the beginning? And does it still remain?
Our north was electronic music, without a clearly defined style! I think we finally achieved it around 2022 when we truly found our definitive sound with the EP The Time.

How does Vioflesh’s discography look today?
Cromático (2017), Vioflesh (self-titled, 2020), Holograma (2021 – soon on streaming), EP The Time (2022), Feeling You Don’t See (2023), Nostalgia (2025).

What does it mean to be a coldwave and darkwave band in South America?
From South America, we are far away from everything! Especially in Chile, which is at the end of the world. We are infinitely grateful for it, but it’s also a challenge to be so distant from the strong movement happening in the U.S. and Europe.

In the process of creating art, there always comes a moment when one must decide that the work is finished. How was that process for this album?
It’s a long process! You have to listen to the same song millions of times until you can finally say, “Okay, we like it!” And when putting together the album, there’s another process of selecting which songs complement each other best, and then making the difficult decision of which ones to leave out.

"Vioflesh - If I Could"

In recent years, it seems you decided to switch your lyrics to English after your self-titled 2020 album, although in 2022 you released the single Deja Ser. What led you to that decision?
The idea is simple: to reach as many listeners as possible! And we found that the songs sound much better in English.

This year, following the release of Nostalgia, you put out the singles Dreams, Within the Veil, Drizzle, and soon Ashes. Are you already working on a new album?
Yes, something new is coming soon!

We live in times of great technological advances. The world seems to be heading toward its own entropy, and what once seemed like science fiction quickly becomes reality. Today, for example, AI is accessible through a simple app on a smartphone. Art has always been a salvation for the soul. How do you feel about these times, in which AI appears as a “solution” to bypass the creative process—or phenomena such as songs generated with the voices of artists, some already deceased?
Vio: I don’t like it! It removes the human and analog aspect. Art must come with feeling, from within your soul! AI cannot deliver that emotion. 

Flesh: When it comes to generating songs with the voices of deceased artists, I find it entertaining, since it creates nostalgia for what they might sound like today—Kurt, Freddie, Michael Hutchence, for example. But as Vio says, music or lyrics created with AI… that’s dead music, music without a soul!

"Vioflesh - My Way"

Today, politically, we are witnessing a regression to ideas we thought were long surpassed (just look at who governs our countries: Trump in the U.S. and Milei in Argentina). I always like to ask artists whether they believe art should—or should not—be a political expression. What are your reflections on this?
We believe that art must always express something! Whether political, emotional, spiritual, etc. Each band or artist chooses what they want to express in their work. For us, we keep away from politics. We prefer to express emotion, spirituality, atmospheres, the ethereal, the eternal, the human—but focused on the personal.

We live in a visual era, where everything revolves around aesthetics (social networks), but also in times of immediacy. How do you approach these aspects?We focus a lot on the visual side. We try to develop a unique stamp and personal style. In live performances, we also aim to deliver a powerful show both visually and sonically. We keep our social networks active—Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, etc.—and we produce our own videos and photos.

How does life continue for the band in 2025?
An important chapter is coming for us: in November, we will embark on our first tour of Mexico and the United States, which makes us very happy. And of course, we will keep releasing new music.

En los últimos años, el resurgimiento del post punk y la dark wave ha cobrado fuerza tanto en Sudamérica como en diferentes rincones del mundo, consolidando una escena oscura, diversa y cada vez más vibrante.

Dentro de este movimiento destaca Vioflesh, dúo chileno conformado por Vio (voz principal y letras) y Flesh (instrumentos y producción), que desde sus inicios ha sabido proyectar su propuesta hacia paisajes sonoros cargados de melancolía, energía y baile sombrío. Con una identidad que mezcla lo etéreo y lo visceral, la banda se ha posicionado como una de las voces más interesantes de la región. Este 2025 regresan con su nuevo trabajo, “Nostalgia”, editado bajo el sello alemán darkTunes Music Group, un álbum que confirma su madurez artística y abre nuevas rutas en su viaje musical.

Con esta nueva etapa en marcha, conversamos con la banda para conocer su presente creativo, sus visiones y lo que significa seguir apostando por sonidos oscuros desde Chile hacia el mundo.

Hola, gracias por aceptar esta entrevista. Para comenzar, me gustaría que se presenten como banda y nos sitúen sonoramente en las intenciones del proyecto.
¡Hola somos Vioflesh, por acá Vio y Flesh muchas gracias por la entrevista! Sonoramente buscamos reflejar nuestras más profundas sensibilidades, emociones y canalizarlas a través de la música, tanto en lo musical como en lo lírico.

Si el reproductor con el que escuchan música solo tuviera espacio para cinco canciones de la banda, ¿cuáles elegirían?
"Midnight", "Always", "If I Could", "My way", "Within the veil", ¡quedaron a fuera muchas! 

"Vioflesh - Midnight"

Muchos lectores tal vez no conozcan su historia. Cuéntennos, ¿cómo y cuándo nace la banda?
Bueno, somos de Santiago de Chile, la banda comienza a mediados del 2017. Partió con un jugueteo con un par de teclados, lo cual llevó a generar las primeras melodías y que conformaron canciones demos, y que dio el paso a la conformación de la banda. A finales del 2017 lanzamos nuestro primer disco de 8 canciones titulado Cromático. y ¡ahí comenzó todo! 

A menudo, al formar una banda se busca un norte, una sonoridad reconocible, una marca que guíe los primeros pasos. ¿Cuál fue su norte en los comienzos? ¿Y aún lo sigue siendo?
¡El Norte era música Electrónica, sin un estilo muy definido! creo que eso lo conseguimos cerca del 2022 cuando realmente encontramos nuestra sonoridad definitiva con el EP “The Time”.

¿Cómo se conforma hoy la discografía de Vioflesh?
“Crimatico” 2017, “Homónimo” 2020, “Holograma” 2021(PRONTO EN REDES), EP “The Time” 2022, “Feeling You Don’t See” 2023, “Nostalgia” 2025.

¿Cómo es “ser una banda de cold wave y dark wave” en Sudamérica?
¡Desde Sudamérica estamos lejos de todo! sobre todo en Chile, que somos en el final del Mundo, lo que agradecemos infinitamente, pero también es un problema estar muy alejado de todo el movimiento fuerte que está sucediendo en EEUU y Europa! 

En el proceso de crear arte siempre llega el momento de decidir cuándo la obra está terminada. ¿Cómo fue ese proceso en este trabajo?
¡Es un proceso largo! ya que hay que escuchar millones de veces la misma canción, hasta decir si está ¡okay nos gusta! y para conformar el disco, también es otro proceso de elegir qué canciones se complementan mejor, y luego tomar la difícil decisión de que canciones quedan fuera. 

"Vioflesh - If I Could"

Desde hace unos años parecen haber decidido volcar sus letras al inglés, después de su álbum Vioflesh (2020), aunque en 2022 apareció el single Deja Ser. ¿A qué se debió esta decisión de cantar en inglés?
¡La idea es simple! ¡es llegar a la mayor cantidad de público! y encontramos que las canciones suenan mucho mejor en inglés.

Este año, tras el lanzamiento de Nostalgia, publicaron los singles Dreams, Within the Veil, Drizzle y pronto Ashes. ¿Ya están trabajando en un nuevo álbum?
¡Si, se viene pronto! 

Vivimos tiempos de grandes avances tecnológicos. El mundo parece avanzar hacia su propia entropía y aquello que antes parecía ciencia ficción se convierte rápidamente en realidad. Hoy, por ejemplo, la IA está al alcance de una app en el celular. El arte siempre ha sido una salvación para el alma.
¿Cómo sienten estos momentos en los que la IA aparece como una “solución” para evitar el proceso creativo, o en fenómenos como canciones generadas con voces de artistas —algunos ya fallecidos—?
Vio: ¡No me gusta! ¡quita lo humano y lo analógico, el arte tiene que ser con sentimiento desde dentro tu alma! la IA no es capaz de entregar ese sentimiento. 

Flesh: En el tema de generar canciones con voces de artistas ya fallecidos lo encuentro entretenido, ya que es nostálgico lo que podría haber sonado actual, por ejemplo, con Kurt, Freddy o Michael Hutchence. Pero como dice Vio, la música creada con IA o Letras, ¡Eso es música muerta, sin alma! 

"Vioflesh - My Way"

Hoy, políticamente, atravesamos un retroceso en ideas que parecían superadas (basta pensar en quienes gobiernan nuestros países: Trump en EE. UU. y Milei en Argentina). Siempre me gusta preguntar a los artistas si consideran que el arte debe ser —o no— una expresión política. ¿Qué reflexiones tienen al respecto?
¡Creemos que el arte siempre debe tener una expresión de algo! ya sea político, emocional, espiritual, etc. Cada banda o artista elige que quiere expresar en su contenido, por ejemplo, nosotros estamos alejados de la política. ¡Nos gusta expresar lo emocional, lo espiritual, las atmósferas, lo etéreo, lo eterno, lo humano, pero enfocado a lo personal!

Vivimos en una época visual, donde todo pasa por la estética (redes sociales), pero también en tiempos de inmediatez. ¿Cómo trabajan ustedes estos aspectos?
Nos enfocamos mucho en lo visual, tratamos de trabajar en tener un sello y estilo propio, en las presentaciones en vivo, también, tener un show potente en lo visual como en el sonido en vivo, mantenemos activas nuestras redes sociales, como Ig, Face, Youtube y etc., hacemos nuestros propios videos, fotos. 

¿Cómo continúa la vida de la banda en este 2025?
Ahora viene una parte importante para nosotros, ya que tendremos nuestra primera gira a México y Estados Unidos en Noviembre, lo cual nos tiene muy felices, y seguir lanzando música.
